Tom Sander: Rodeo

Sander’s concerns lie in our involvement with the spaces we create, those created for us, and the middle ground in which the built environment is interrupted by improvisation, spontaneity and decay. Collage (‘the bringing together of diverse elements in an open-ended and ongoing situation’) and the notion of a ‘material diary’ are key elements within his practice.

Taking as a starting point the idea of artistic practice as the building of a site in which to explore the
relationship between self and environment, the exhibition attempts to both depict and evoke the act of material engagement with a given place. Often guided by a sense of uncertainty and groundlessness (and the resultant need for reconnection with the physical), he is interested in the translation of the psychological to the physical and visual and the modes in which this process can be represented.
