I FOUND MYSELF HIGH ABOVE GROUND: During the residency at Market, Vicki Fleck has been exploring the metaphysical state of astral projection using accounts of outer body experiences (OTB's) voiced on the Internet.
Proponents of astral projection maintain that it is possible to leave the physical world and all its constraints behind, temporarily transporting themselves to another spatial location, by effort of will alone.
Within her installation at Market Fleck uses cotton sheets along with threads, cords, and knots in an effort to bring some of these concepts down to earth.
TAKE AWAY LIGHT: Krisdy Shindler’s work explores the visual re-definition and describing of the landscapes and cartography of knowledge. Using a variety of methods, primarily painting and stop-frame animation, her work investigates the movements, mechanics and progression of knowledge. Krisdy Shindler’s work has been exhibited in Canada, Israel, Denmark and across the UK and Scotland.
For the Residency at Market, Shindler has created a series of work that examine the absence of light in painting. In the past, Shindler has used the hyper-revealing effects of light, in both her paintings and animated works, as a method to emphasize the nature of paint; light, colour, brushstroke, and image. Reversely, the new series of back-lit paintings will explore the application of paint as a means of removing light from painting. In a similar way to Krisdy Shindler’s animated works, over the course of the residency, the ligtbox paintings will journey themselves; this time into darkness.
